The Dance Company Bringing an African Home to the Tri-Cities
Isaac Gasangwa didn’t have any connection to Port Moody before this year’s Art Out Side. He left calling it “just the beginning of something much bigger.”
Isaac is the founder and artistic director of AfroBeats Van. He started the company in 2017 after noticing something missing. “There was a real lack of an ‘African home’ — a space that truly represented our culture and our people,” he told Port Moody Pulse. “I couldn’t just sit back and wait for someone else to build it.”
With his company ELITE SQUAD, Isaac brought a preview of his upcoming production Ndabaga Code to Art Out Side, ahead of its full premiere at the STAND Festival in November. “It’s a love letter to all women, with a deeply personal focus on Black women who migrated from Africa to Canada to chase a better life.”
