Construction begins on Port Moody’s biggest-ever development

Construction is now visibly underway on Inlet District, Wesgroup Properties’ 14.8-acre master-planned community at the corner of Ioco Road and Barnet Highway — the largest redevelopment project in Port Moody’s history. The first tower, a 27-storey building called 1 Market Square, broke ground after roughly 50 aging single-family homes on the site were cleared, with several relocated to remote communities rather than demolished.

When that first tower is complete around 2029, it will add 299 homes ranging from studios to three-bedroom units, along with a new grocery store and daycare. The full build-out, expected to take about 25 years, calls for six residential towers as tall as 31 storeys plus several low-rise buildings — roughly 2,500 new homes housing an eventual 5,500 residents.

The development agreement between the city and Wesgroup includes more than $137 million in community contributions: a new park of roughly 2.5 acres, a pedestrian overpass connecting the site across Ioco Road to Inlet Centre SkyTrain station, and a rental building reserving at least 10 percent of its units for seniors. The neighbourhood is being designed with no surface roads — all vehicle access and parking will be underground.
